As for “hobbies”, I’m currently hard at work testing the latest generation of home theater 3D video projectors. Related to that, I will soon (ahem) post a review of a brand new piece of cool technology which will certainly be making waves in home theaters all around the world.

First up is Californication. No, not the Red Hot Chili Peppers album. This one’s better than that, but so is almost everything else. Except Dave Gahan’s new album, which is crap. Californication tells the story of Hank Moody, a writer with a severe case of writer’s block. He’s written three novels, the latest of which turned out to be such a big hit it got optioned and made into a ghastly romcom starring “Tom and Katie”. Moody hates the director of that crapfest with gusto and the feeling’s mutual, resulting in some rather funny altercations.

Moody is aptly named since he’s… well, quite moody indeed. He’s also horny as hell and bangs at least two to three different women in every episode. Oh yeah, and we get to see their tits. A lot. As the series is shown on Showtime (also known as The New HBO), they don’t have to worry about censorship and the F-Bomb is dropped, along with pants, quite often. It’s not quite Deadwood in that respect, but it’s about 20 F-Bombs per episode closer to Deadwood than anything showing on networks like Fox, ABC or NBC.

Did I mention we get to see a lot of titties? It’s not all good though, since in the first episode we get to see the mammaries of Madeline Zima. No, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with her pair, but she used to play the role of little Grace Sheffield in The Nanny, starring the squeaky-voiced Fran Drescher. Madeline was in her pre-teens in that show, so seeing her all grown up like this is a bit jarring. Well, unless you never watched The Nanny.

Anyhoo. Hank Moody is played by none other than Fo… David Duchovny. He’s pretty much perfect for the role, actually, with his dead-pan delivery and that asshole smirk. The character’s obviously way too clever for his own good and his witty/nasty repartee is constantly getting him into trouble. I’ve watched the first six episodes now and there’s been a number of laughed-out-loud moments in each one. Duchovny is brilliant, the storyline’s quite touching and even realistic at times, and the jokes are usually quite funny, as are the awkward situations Moody finds himself in. It gets a bit sappy and luvvy-duvvy at times, but what can you expect from a show where the main character is trying to get back with his former girlfriend and doing his best not to lose his pre-teen daughter? Keep an eye out for Moody’s agent who gets a bloody hilarious sub-plot of his own.

The second new show I’ve taken a shine to is Life. Damien Lewis plays Charlie Crews, a cop who got life in prison for a crime he did not commit. He served 12 years, getting the living shit kicked out of him almost on a daily basis. Now he’s free and back in the police force as a detective. And is he bitter? Is he mad about his wrongful incarceration? Not really, no. He’s loaded with settlement money, he’s very good in his job and ridiculously charismatic. He’s also bonkers, but in a good way.

Lewis has done excellent job in pretty much everything he’s ever been in, from British costume dramas to Band of Brothers mini-series. He certainly doesn’t disappoint in Life, either. Lewis creates a very interesting character in Charlie Crews; at the same time cold, aloof and detached, but you can tell there’s fire and passion burning behind those cool eyes. For the most part of episode 1 Crews seems to be content with his situation: a man living in the present, a man who’s ready to begin anew; a man who’s forgiven and forgotten. A bit ho-hum, to be honest. And then… the last scene of the episode turned everything upside down. It gave a purpose for the man and the show alike. I won’t spoil it, but it was that scene which made me put Life on my “Can’t wait to see how this story ends” list. Another reason to watch Life? Sarah Shahi. She’s hot.

Lionshare of the kudos should probably go to David Nutter, who is one of the three executive producers and directed the pilot episode. He’s a seasoned veteran of episodic genre television, whose name first became familiar to me during his stint on The X-Files. Go and take a peek at his resume, and you’ll see what I mean.

Josh Friedman is second of the three executive producers. His credits include the screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds and Brian De Palma’s The Black Dahlia. He also wrote this pilot episode, which succeeeds in laying down a groundwork for intriguing future episodes. The script contains a number of nods to the original Terminator movies: one character is named “Cameron” (for James Cameron, duh!) and at one point she utters the famous words, “Come with me if you want to live.” In the comments section for my previous post, OlliS commented that the plot “tastes yummy”. I have to agree; it’s positively delish!

(In case you’re wondering about the third executive producer… James Middleton’s previous credits are pretty much limited to associate producing a turd called Basic Instinct 2. I think he’s in this show only because he’s previously worked with Mario Kassar and Andrew G. Vajna.)

On to particulars, then, while trying to avoid spoilers. I thought there was plenty of action for a 50-minute pilot episode. Sure, some of it looked low-budget and there were a couple of amateurish jump cuts (like they hadn’t shot enough coverage), but overall it was a pretty good effort. Performances by Lena Headey (as Sarah Connor) and Thomas Dekker (as John Connor) left some room for improvement, but I didn’t see anything to make me cringe.

(Spoiler ahead!) Then there’s Summer Glau, who played River Tam in Firefly and Serenity. If you saw either of those, you know exactly what to expect from her in this show. Her character, Cameron, is not the familiar vacant-eyed fighter at first, but something happens and… hell, I’ll just say it since you probably guessed or know it already: she’s a Terminator, sent from the future to protect John Connor. And she’s totally River Tam.

As it happens, Cameron is physically the same age as John Connor, and pretty darn cute to boot. Yeah, you’re probably thinking what I’m thinking. Will we be forced to watch while a female robot explores her sensuality with the future leader of the human resistance? Gods, I hope not. That’s exactly the kind of thing that would ruin the show. Well, I’m fairly certain they won’t subject us to that during the first season; that sort of crap tends to crop up in season two or three after the show has jumped the shark.

All in all, I’d rate the pilot 8 out of 10. This show could really endure, as the story is perfect for this format. The main characters are always moving from one place to another, while evil is constantly a single step behind them. There’s a possibility of time travel, past affecting the future, maybe even clues travelling back in time… it’s the motherlode for genre TV. I’m certainly looking forward to more episodes.

Well, since the studios were kind enough to leak some of this stuff, I had no choice but to oblige them by downloading some episodes. First up was Bionic Woman, a remake of the 1976 show starring Lindsay Wagner as Jaime Sommers, who receives bionic replacements after a skydiving accident. This remake is spearheaded by David Eick, who is partly responsible for the much touted remake of Battlestar Galactica.

The episode I found lying around was clearly a workprint. Some of the FX sequences were unfinished and there was some copyright-y notice on screen the entire time. Funnily enough the notice also contains the letters “DE”. Perhaps this leak came from David Eick himself?

Well, he shouldn’t have bothered. I couldn’t even finish the damn episode. When a pissed-off Jaime Sommers squares off with the guy who’s responsible for her slowly-awakening new powers, I was already expecting the worst. Yeah, after a 20-second conversation they end up in bed – and I hammered the STOP-button.

To wash some of the taste out of my mouth, I fired up the first episode (not a preair, actually) of The Company. It’s a miniseries consisting of three 2-hour episodes shown on TNT, produced by Ridley and Tony Scott, and starring Alfred Molina, Chris O’Donnell and Michael Keaton. ‘The Company’ refers to CIA and the story takes place during the Cold War. Molina and O’Donnell are spies, gathering information in East Berlin.

After a rather slow first hour things started really heating up. Double agents, KGB and moles in positions of power, oh my! I guess I’m a sucker for spy stories, because this one really piqued my interest. Episode two was aired yesterday and I simply can’t wait to… uh, acquire it as soon as possible.

By this time it was already really, really late, but I couldn’t retire for the night before taking a peek at the pilot episode of Sarah Connor Chronicles. I skipped around the episode, seeing only glimpses of it. Looks like plenty of action… and hey, it’s that girl from Firefly/Serenity! Any show with her in it gets my vote.

Kringin aiemmat krediitit eivät varsinaisesti valaneet uskoa projektiin. Pelkäsin sarjan kehittyvän päämäärättömäksi ihmissuhdedraamaksi ja sci-fi-ainesten jäävän taka-alalle. Kuinka väärässä olinkaan! Katsoin tänään putkeen jaksot 102-105 ja Heroes on nyt ehdoton suosikkini tänä vuonna alkaneista uusista jenkkisarjoista. Unohtakaa Studio 60, joka on lupaavan alun jälkeen jäänyt polkemaan paikoillaan.

Olen ollut sarjakuvien ystävä ja suurkuluttaja pikkupojasta asti. Eipä siis ihme, että sarjakuvan tarustoon (muttei visuaaliseen ilmaisuun) tukeutuva Heroes soittaa antaumuksella jotain kieltä syvällä sisimmässäni. Yksi sarjan tuottajista ja käsikirjoittajista on jo legendaarinen sarjiskäsikirjoittaja Jeph Loeb, jonka aiempiin TV-krediitteihin lukeutuvat mm. Smallville ja Lost. Veikkaanpa, että on nimenomaan Loebin ansiota, että Heroes toimii niin upeasti.

Aivan liian monet tieteissarjat putoavat siihen sudenkuoppaan, että tekijät eivät ole miettineet asioita tarpeeksi valmiiksi ja tarpeeksi pitkälle. Sen ansiosta sarjojen faneja kidutetaan täysin irrallisilla täytejaksoilla, joiden lopussa hahmot tai tarina eivät kumpikaan ole edenneet hituistakaan. Mikäli jotain radikaalia jakson aikana tapahtuu, painetaan lopussa reset-nappulaa jonkin naurettavan selityksen varjolla, jotta kaikki on ennallaan seuraavan jakson alussa. Trekki-fanit tietävät ihan liian hyvin, mitä tarkoitan.

Heroesin viiden ensimmäisen jakson aikana moisesta vetkuttelusta tai täytteestä ei ole jälkeäkään. Sarja etenee kuin hallinnasta irti pyrkivä höyryjuna. Uusista kyvyistään hämmentyneiden sankareiden ja samalla koko tarinan päämäärä paljastettiin katsojille jo toisessa tai kolmannessa jaksossa! Viiden jakson aikana tarinaa on viety tuota päämäärää kohti sellaisella vauhdilla, että pelkään koko sarjan olevan enintään 12 jakson mittainen.

Mikä upeinta, Heroesissa on jatkuva juoni. Kovin harvoilla networkeilla on enää rohkeutta moiseen, koska katsojien on hyvin vaikea loikata jatkuvajuonisen sarjan mukaan kesken tarinan. Tuo kääntyy helposti kauden edetessä laskeviin katsojalukuihin ja uutta yleisöä on lähes turha toivoa. Rohkea ja kunnioitettava temppu siis NBC:ltä. He ovat ehkäpä laskeneet sen varaan, että sarjasta kesken kauden kiinnostuneet ihmiset lataavat (tai jopa ostavat!) aiemmat jaksot netistä ja nousevat sen avulla kelkkaan.

Pikkuhiljaa supersankareiksi muuttuvia matti meikäläisiä, salaliittoja, aikamatkailua, huumoria, supervoimat omaavia pahiksia… Heroesissa on kaikki ainekset noustakseen tieteissarjojen eliittiin.

Vuosikaudet Studio 60:tä tuottanut Mendell on lopulta saanut tarpeekseen. Hän on seurannut S60:n muuttumista älykkäästä, ajatuksia herättävästä showsta hampaattomaksi, säälittäväksi irvikuvaksi. Poliittisen oikeiston, uskovaisten ja muiden painostuksesta TV-yhtiön harjoittama äänikonservatiivinen ennakkosensuuri on tuhonnut Mendellin rakastaman sarjan. Mendell rynnistää kameroiden eteen kesken suoran lähetyksen ja aloittaa monologin, joka kritisoi amerikkalaisen tv-tarjonnan nykytilannetta ja jenkkiyhteiskunnan epäkohtia, tuoden samalla esiin näiden kahden välisen vuorovaikutuksen.

Mendellin vuodatus katkaistaan melkein alkuunsa, mutta vahinko on jo tapahtunut. Mendell saa lähtöpassit ja NBS-tv-yhtiön lippulaivashow on tuuliajolla. Samaan aikaan NBS saa uuden presidentin, Jordan McDeeren (Amanda Peet), nuoren ja viehättävän naisen, joka joutuu todistamaan kykynsä miesvaltaisessa maailmassa. McDeere pestaa ensitöikseen Studio 60:n vetäjiksi Matt Albien (Matthew Perry, Frendit) ja Danny Trippin (Bradley Whitford, West Wing), jotka työskentelivät show’ssa joitain vuosia aikaisemmin.

Albie on nerokas, mutta neuroottinen käsikirjoittaja, joka on juuri voittanut käsikirjoittajien kiltan arvostetuimman palkinnon. Hän ei ole järin innoissaan paluusta Studio 60:een, kiitos vastikään kariutuneen suhteen show’n tähden (Sarah Paulson) kanssa. Tripp on tehokas tuottajahahmo, joka löytää aina konstit alaistensa ja Albien motivointiin. Hänen syntinsä on kokaiini, josta kärähtäminen estää häntä saamasta elokuvansa ohjaamiselle välttämätöntä vakuutusta.

Sorkin ja Schlamme haukkuivat jenkkiläiset tv-ohjelmat syvimpään helvettiin Mendellin monologissa. Albien ja Trippin lehdistötilaisuus toimii kehyksenä kaksikon manifestille, joka julistaa paluuta oikeasti älykkään ja laadukkaan televisioviihteen pariin. Unohtakaa katsojansa idiooteiksi muuttavat tosi-tv-ohjelmat, typerryttävät visailut ja muut matalaotsaisinta kansanosaa kosiskelevat paskapökäleet; Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip tulee näyttämään, mitä on hyvä tv.

Sorkinin ja Schlammen viesti sai minut haukkomaan henkeäni. Mielestäni kaksikko nosti riman tasolle, jota heidän on mahdoton saavuttaa. Toisaalta — asialla on nyt kaksi kannuksensa ansainnutta ammattilaista, jotka kirjoittavat heille tutuista asioista. Albie ja Tripp ovat selvääkin selvemmin Sorkinin ja Schlammen alter egot, joskin hahmot omaavat piirteitä molemmista sarjan luojista. Sorkin sai aikoinaan kenkää West Wingistä jäätyään kiinni huumeista, joten Trippin kokemukset Hollywood-hylkiönä ovat miehelle erittäin tuttuja.

Sarja tarjoaa myös varsin ainutlaatuisen katsauksen tv-ohjelman taustoissa tapahtuvaan politikointiin ja kähmintään. Albieta ja Trippiä tukeva McDeere on vähän väliä napit vastakkain NBS-yhtiön johtoryhmän kanssa, milloin show’n uskonnolla vitsailevan sisällön takia, milloin Albien ja Trippin julkisten lausuntojen takia. Sarjaa katsoessaan on helppo kuvitella, millaisia keskusteluja Sorkin ja Schlamme ovat joutuneet aikoinaan käymään lakimiestensä ja tv-yhtiön edustajien kanssa.

Olen nyt katsonut sarjaa kolme jaksoa, enkä muista, koska olisin viimeksi odottanut jonkin tv-sarjan seuraavaa jaksoa näin innokkaasti. No, ehkä Battlestar Galactica sai ensimmäisellä tuotantokaudellaan aikaan samanlaisia viboja. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip on yksinkertaisesti loistava! Älykäs, nerokas ja hauska. Vaikka mikä tahansa Frendeihin liittyvä saa minussa aikaan äärettömän vahvan inhoreaktion, on Matthew Perry onnistunut valinta Albien rooliin. Vähintään yhtä onnistunut on David Trippin roolitus; Bradley Whitford vakuutti jo West Wingissä, ja mies on kerännyt minulta rutosti irtopisteitä vierailuillaan Bill Maherin poliittisessa talk showssa Real Time with Bill Maher.

Vain kolme jaksoa alla, mutta hahmot tuntuvat jo nyt aidoilta ihmisiltä, joiden tunteisiin ja kokemuksiin on helppo samaistua. Sarja tempaisi minut maailmaansa uskomattoman vaivattomasti. Huomasin eläväni täysillä mukana uudistuneen Studio 60:n ensimmäisen jakson valmisteluissa, ja jännitin Albien ja Trippin kanssa yleisön reaktioita ja katsojalukuja. Myös kulisseissa tapahtuva, tv-yleisölle näkymätön kädenvääntö vaikuttaa hyvin kiinnostavalta; ehkä osittain sen takia, että minulla on omakohtaisia kokemuksia tv-sarjan tekemisestä.

Sitten ne huonot uutiset: heti pilottijaksosta lähtien oli selvää, että Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip on jenkkitelevisioon aivan liian älykäs ja kriittinen sarja. Pilotin katsojaluvut eivät olleet kovin kummoiset ja ovat sen jälkeen pudonneet neljänneksellä. Sarja mahtui toissa viikolla hädin tuskin Amerikan 50 katsotuimman sarjan listalle. Sorkinin ja Schlammen uskalias yritys nostaa jenkki-tv:n tasoa vaikuttaa tuhoon tuomitulta. Sääli, ja valtaisa menetys laadukkaan tv:n ystäville.
