So, Army of Two: The 40th Day for PS3. I play almost nothing but co-op games these days and as Borderlands (by far one of the best games I’ve played in years) was starting to taste a bit too grind-tastic after 100+ hours of gameplay, I was really looking forward to playing The 40th Day co-op campaign.

Except that it’s nigh on impossible to enjoy the experience. Regardless of how good your internet connection is, co-op campaign throws you out of EA’s server every 10-15 minutes – totally at random. After that happens, you need to restart the co-op campaign, select your character and difficulty level, re-invite your buddy and start again from previous checkpoint. You lose all progress, all money and all weapons modifications you did before the disconnect. At the end of our first co-op session I told my friend I refuse to touch this piece of crap game until EA releases a patch which fixes the disconnection issue.

Oh, and while I’m at it, why on earth do we need to stay in constant connection to EA’s servers while playing the co-op campaign? Two players against an army of NPCs, you know? Why the need for anything but peer-to-peer connection, huh?

Anyhoo, EA released a patch for the game a few days ago. I downloaded the patch earlier today in anticipation for our 9 o’clock session. And off we went! Neither of us could remember what controller button did what, but a few minutes of experimentation soon sorted that out. The mission ahead was pretty tough, we effed up a couple of times and had to restart from previous checkpoint, you know the drill. Eventually we reached a point where we had cleared the immediate area of enemies and were planning our next move.

And suddenly… *KA-DONNGGG!!* “You have been disconnected from EA’s server.”

EA, what the fuck? Honestly, what the fuck? EA, surely you realise that the co-op campaign happens to be the reason why people bought this game? With that in mind, shouldn’t you, umm, you know, maybe have had a couple of guys playtest the co-op campaign in PlayStation Network before releasing the code for replication? Don’t say you did, because I know that’s a blatant lie. Check out your own forums and you’ll find umpteen players complaining about this issue. If you had tested co-op in PSN, you would have noticed the problem within ONE hour!

Or maybe you knew? Maybe you thought, “Hell, we need to make our Q1 figures look good for the shareholders so we’d better put this puppy out there! Yeah, co-op players disconnect from our servers all the time which kinda completely ruins the game, but we can fix it later by putting out a patch. Right? Right. Now let’s make some money – and fuck those gamers!”

No, Electronic Arts. No. Fuck you.

Artist: Babylonia
Title: Motel La Solitude

In brief: Well-produced electronic rock/pop from Italy, obviously influenced by DepMode

I don’t remember exactly where and how I first bumped into Babylonia. I probably heard their rather fantastic single “(If U Want) My Love” which spurred me into blind-buying their first album “Later Tonight v2.0″ from a German online retailer. I enjoyed the album immensely, especially “A Spreading Infection”, one of the v2.0’s extra tracks which was noticeably harder-hitting than the rest of the rather poppy, at times bordering on cheesy, album. In fact, it made such an impression on me that I had to contact the band.

To my surprise, I got a reply. It was from Massimo ‘Max’ Giunta, band’s singer/songwriter/producer, who told me “A Spreading Infection” is a sign of things to come; their next album would be “harder” in style. At the time I welcomed the news.

Some years passed, during which I gently ribbed Max a few times about the album’s slow progression. Now, four years after “Later Tonight”, Babylonia has finally released their second album, “Motel La Solitude”.

Firstly, a word of warning to Babylonia fans: “Motel La Solitude” is almost nothing like the first album. Babylonia has matured considerably in many ways. The production is slicker and more sophisticated, lyrics more polished and grammatically more correct (if pop lyrics can be expected to adhere to grammar) and Max’s vocals show a level of nuance and emotion I wasn’t expecting.

Max’s voice really deserves a paragraph of its own. He’s got one of those voices that comes out sounding completely effortless and natural; hearing him sing gives the impression that he must’ve recorded all his vocals in only one or two takes – no more was needed to achieve perfection. His range is pretty good as well; for best demonstration check out track #4, “Beautiful Losers”. It has a few very Erasure-ish bridges where Max’s glissando channels Andy Bell rather remarkably. The vocals also contain numerous examples of rather brilliant emoting, ranging from pain and anguish to joy. There are a couple of instances where the emotion comes across maybe a bit too strongly for some, but to me it’s all a very welcome change from the dry and impersonal style so common in mainstream pop music.

While Babylonia has matured, the change is not all good. I make no bones about being whole-heartedly into electronic music and having a very refined (“limited”, “narrow” and “prejudiced”, say others) taste in music. I abhor the sound of mostly unprocessed acoustic drums and especially the thrice-damned distorted guitar, screeching away like a tortured pussycat from hell.

Bear with me here for a moment.

You see, Babylonia are fans of Depeche Mode. Like so many artists around the world, they fell in love with electronic music during DM’s Golden Era; the time when DM used electronics as a tool, instead of a gimmick or an empty promise to lure their disillusioned fans back into the fold. As so often happens, the artist begins his/her/their career by emulating Depeche Mode and throughout the years they slowly find their own voice and sound.

Babylonia has a sound of their own, certainly, but they are still following their idols’ musical footsteps by embracing their inner rockstars and bringing a variety of rock elements to the foreground. It might be they are not doing this intentionally but subconsciously. The result, whatever the motivation, is the same.

There’s a reason I classified this album’s genre as “Electronic pop/rock” instead of “Electronic pop” or “Synthpop”. Some tracks are rife with traditional rock’n'roll elements dominating the soundscape, only momentarily taking a backseat to give synths some room to breathe. I’m not saying there aren’t plenty of warm pads, arpeggios and synthlines to enjoy on this album – there certainly are. But Babylonia’s new harder, rockier sound is treading a thin line between electronic music with guitars and rock music with synths. For the most part they pull it off successfully.

Putting my complaints about guitars etc. aside for a moment, I actually liked the album quite a lot. It’s a more cohesive whole than the first album, the quality of song writing is better on average and it’s obvious Babylonia has invested a lot of time in the production and mixing of the album, polishing it to sonical perfection. There’s no shortage of nice chord changes, cool vocal arrangements, strong rhythms or impressive synth sounds here either.

But, like all albums, this one has its hits and misses. It appears to suffer from a lack of obvious hit singles, ones that grab you right away and refuse to let go. There are times when production and arrangement go over the top and choke the life out of an otherwise fine refrain. And, let’s face it, a couple of tracks are swinging a set of hooks so blunt you’ll be forgiven for missing the refrain entirely.

I’ll leave you with some random thoughts written down while listening to the album.

01. A Feeling without a Feeling: Nice intro, followed by a rather basic electro rock beat. Hard to get a proper impression of the whole, structure feels messy. Chorus doesn’t grab me. Not the best possible track to open an album with.

02. The Corner: Starts off with a very DM-ish guitar arrangement. Heavy bass kick and oh yeah, here comes the distorted guitar. A rumbling monster of a track, with Kraftwerkian snaps and three-note arpeggios thrown in. Moody verse opens up to a brighter refrain which falls a bit flat.

03. By My Side: First single from the album and a good choice for a single release. Has the catchiest chorus by far. Very sing-along refrain gets a nice lift from the preceding bridge. One of the best tracks of the album, easily.

04. Beautiful Losers: Nice intro with some synths in the background with distinct vocals on top. Striking difference in tone between parts, like they’re from two totally separate songs. Did I miss the chorus? … Is that Andy Bell?

05. Better Days: More Andy Bell! Very smooth and poppy mid-tempo track that sounds like it could’ve been done by Erasure.

06. Ethereal Connection: Personal Jesus! Oh come on, it’s even got the tickity-tick percussion. It’s not a rip-off really, more of a loving tip of the hat to PJ. This one flows smoothly and switches over to basic 4/4 rhythm for some sections.

07. Myself Into Myself: Ooh, a lovely little 8-note synth melody between vocal bits, this brings back fond memories. Remember when DM used to have distinctive synth melodies, themes, in their songs, like the one in Strangelove? What’s happened to those? Anyway, this could have been a single but I fear the refrain is not strong enough.

08. Requiem For Me: Mid-tempo, ballad-y verses, chorus gets an injection of energy, plenty of nice percussion in the background. Quite a beautiful track, in fact.

09. Soundtrack for an End: Wow, starts with a soundscape that brings to mind Some Great Reward, all echoing with a metallic harpsichord on top. Nice vocal choruses and arpeggios in the background, beautifully warm and low-key refrain. Lovely vocal production throughout.

10. Enough is Enough: Piano-backed ballad, this album’s “Somebody”.

11. Love Not For Me: Starts with a build-up of strings, followed by a rather heavy drum beat, filled out with synths bleeping and blooping. Verse has familiar-sounding synths drifting in and out, it’s all very SOFAD/Ultra, somber and serious. Very nice bridge turns out to be part of the refrain which goes nowhere but sounds very lush doing that.

12. Camera con Vista: Instrumental filler.

13. Waiting for a Sun: Another ballad. Not my cup of tea.

14. Runner in the Night: Long intro exploding into an uptempo banger with a strong 4/4 beat. Aggressive bassline pours more fuel on the fire. Those damn guitars are back with a vengeance. Long stretches of instrumental idling. Hang on, is there really only one verse, followed by several repeats of the refrain?

—

Songs:
Production/mixing/audio quality:

One of the rare niggles I’ve had with the mostly fantastic HTC Hero has been it’s thirst for power. And by power I mean battery power, not influence over nations. A while back I read a tweet about Mugen Power’s new 3200mAh battery for the Hero. Back then I still had some money set aside for impulse purchases so I ordered one. It took almost three weeks to arrive and came with a new battery door, i.e. a replacement plastic rear cover for the phone.

That’s because the new battery is a lot thicker than the original one, and practically doubles Hero’s girth. My previously slim Hero now looks like it’s about to give birth. Oddly enough I found the new fatter Hero feels somewhat more comfortable in hand than the original slim one. It doesn’t feel more comfortable in a trouser pocket, however.

According to the instructions, I was supposed to first charge the battery in the phone for 12 hours… so I did. I know, me following instructions!? It’s a crazy world. Furthermore, the instructions also say that after that first charging I should use the phone until the battery is running very low, then recharge. By repeating this procedure a few times I should have a longer-lasting battery, I suppose. To my surprise, it took the battery almost five days to run down to 15% which is when Hero starts making a fuss about recharging. The phone was on 24 hours a day and saw lots of heavy use, including 12+ hours of talking and plenty of browsing the internet via HSDPA. The original battery wouldn’t have lasted a day in similar conditions. Despite adding weight and volume to the Hero, I have to say I’m very pleased with the new battery and how it has transformed the way I use my Hero.

I’ve been scrambling to clear my workload all weekend and started to feel pretty darn exhausted, so I fired up my RSS reader. Francesco Marciuliano showed perfect timing with his post How to Make the Most of the Time between Losing a Job and Finding Yourself in Another Job. I’ve been an entrepreneur for almost 10 years now, and this part of his post had me rolling on the floor:

Start a business! If unemployment will teach you anything it’s that you can’t count on others to keep paying you (and that most physical injuries seem to occur the second your health coverage lapses). So why not make your own money?!

By becoming an entrepreneur you not only get to be the captain of your own destiny but also the crew, the shipbuilder, the dockhand and the one who first comes upon the wreckage on the beach. Hours once spent on one mind-numbing job can now be spent on countless heart-racing tasks, from drawing up a business proposal to conducting a market analysis to ascertain the viability of your idea to deciding on whether it will be a general partnership, limited liability company or sole proprietorship to securing the necessary permits and licenses to determining whether or not to file for S Corporation status to selecting and reserving a company name to developing a capitalization/borrowing/debt service plan to obtaining all required government forms to drafting all employment contracts to establishing check-cashing procedures to having an independent appraiser calculate the replacement value of your property to shopping for the best loan terms to identifying all trademarks, patents, copyrights and service marks you must register or purchase.

And that’s just the first ten years! Soon you’ll be working three jobs just to secure the initial capital and expenses reserve you’ll need to operate a full-time business that you can now only find time to keep open between midnight and five a.m. You may not make a fortune. You may not even live to see forty. But you will have certainly made the most of your time off by ensuring you never, ever have the chance to nap or even sleep again.

Perfect, just perfect. My hat’s off to you, Francesco.

Allow me to introduce a small-ish application which has saved me a lot of grief in the past year or so. I stumbled on HD Sentinel by accident, and it was one of the luckiest accidents I’ve ever had.

To borrow from HD Sentinel’s website, it’s a “multi-OS HDD/SSD monitoring and analysis application. Its goal is to find, test, diagnose and repair disk drive problems, report and display SSD and HDD health, performance degradations and failures. Hard Disk Sentinel gives complete textual description, tips and displays/reports the most comprehensive information about the hard disks and solid state disks inside the computer or in external enclosures (USB/e-SATA). Many different alerts and report options are available to ensure maximum safety of your valuable data.”

It’s a godsend to someone like me who’s running a large-ish number of HDDs in various PCs 24/7, all through the year. HD Sentinel has so far prevented three catastrophic data losses, simply by sending me an early warning e-mail about an impending HDD failure. This has allowed me to back-up or move important data to a safer location, then replace the drive with a new one. HD Sentinel can analyse all hard disks attached to a PC, including those that are connected to a RAID controller.

I have an external HDD cradle, connected via USB to a PC running HD Sentinel. This lets me perform quick analysis on a hard drive; I simply pop the drive in the cradle, let Windows mount the drive, then open up HD Sentinel to check the condition of the HDD.

The application can be configured to suit your needs. For example, you can tell it to e-mail you an incredibly detailed report about the PC it’s running on, with plenty of information about installed hardware and software. I like my information short and concise, so HD Sentinel e-mails me some basic info only when a HDD’s health drops below a pre-set level:

Let’s run through HD Sentinel’s UI quickly.

Top left corner lists all the HDDs attached to the PC. You can get a good idea of all your HDDs condition at a glimpse. As you can see, one of the HDDs is feeling poorly and its health is down to 23%. In the overview tab on the right you’ll get a more detailed description as to what is happening with the HDD in question. HD Sentinel also gives you an estimate of the drive’s remaining lifetime, based on the drive’s past performance and development of health issues. As for the HDD depicted in the screenshot, it might be a good idea to start copying the data elsewhere.

This tab shows you the drive’s temperature, both current and history. Like the blue text says, you should calibrate the temp to get correct values. I haven’t done that, but it’s obvious I should probably do something about the airflow around my HDDs.

Here’s something for all you geeks out there. This is the S.M.A.R.T. information HD Sentinel has read off the disk. Me, I get by just fine with the Overview tab.

I forgot to grab a screenshot of the Information tab. It contains row after row of information about the selected HDD, beginning with Summary, moving on to ATA information, HDD’s current Acoustic Management settings, a list of supported ATA and S-ATA Features, and a whole lot more.

Log screen lists all the problems encountered with the HDD.

Disk Performance tab gives you information such as HDD’s total data reads and writes, average reads and writes per day, current and average transfer rates, and so on and so forth. Finally, the Alerts tab lists all events serious enough to warrant an e-mail to the system operator.

HD Sentinel is a tool worth buying and using. I’m running it in all my PCs, and if there’s anything negative to say about it… well, I hope I could run it in all my various NAS boxes as well.

It was only very recently that I finally had a moment to hook up the Logitech G25 to my PS3 and to really get to grips with Codemasters’ Colin McRae Dirt. It’s a lot of fun – especially on a 3-meter-wide screen sitting at a distance of 2 meters. I was really looking forward to DiRT 2. It arrived from Amazon.uk today, and I stole an hour off work to try it out.

Well, Codemasters fucked it up good and proper. They bloody well americanized it. They dumbed it down for slack-jawed yokels. The presentation alone made me struggle to keep down my breakfast: the front-end is jammed full of American X Games celebrities mangling the English language with “hip” street talk and utterly fake enthusiasm. People like Travis Pastrana, Dave Mirra and Ken Block. Remember a game called Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX? Yeah, that’s him. Pastrana? He’s a motocross racer and a stunt performer. Ken Block is a rally driver but I never would’ve known that if I hadn’t googled his name.

The first time you launch the game you’re forced to sit through a demonstration of the menu system. It goes on for so long I was shouting at the screen, “Shut up you wanker and let me race!” And the bloody demo doesn’t even mention Options (or I missed it due to professional-level facepalming) which made me start my first race with an automatic gearbox.

There seems to be very little actual rally driving in DiRT 2. During the hour or so I opened perhaps 20 tracks, among them a maximum of 5 proper rally tracks. And the rest? American stadium-style racing with dune buggies, 4×4s and other most definitely non-rally vehicles, complete with fireworks and cheering crowds. Bullshit, in a nutshell. OK, sure, there were plenty of non-rally races in the first game, but it was never this grandiose or in-your-face.

Let me give you a perfect example of the dumbing down: setting up your car. In DiRT you had several screens filled with a hojillion options. You could really set the car exactly the way you wanted it. In DiRT 2 you get one screen with six settings: gear ratio, downforce, suspension, ride height, differential and brake bias. And if that isn’t frustrating enough, each setting has only five values from low to high. That’s grade-A bullshit right there.

By this time you might be wondering if there’s anything good in this game. Well, yes. It recognized the Logitech G25 wheel automatically and supports the H-grid shifter. Not that you really need it, but anyway. The graphics are slightly better and there’s not quite so much glitching or stuttering. I also have to mention the car handling. In fact, I prefer DiRT 2’s modeling of rally car behavior. It feels tighter, ‘heavier’ and the car feels better connected to the road under it. More authentic, in other words. There were moments in DiRT where the car felt like it was sliding on a thin layer of grease, and I felt I wasn’t really in control of the car properly. There’s less of that in DiRT 2 – as far as rally cars are concerned. I won’t comment on other vehicles.

To recap: nerve-grating presentation, bullshit stadium racing, extremely heavy influence of X Games and Xtreme sports, embarrassing dialogue and voice acting, and populated by celebrities better known for something else than rally driving.

What a way to honor the late Colin McRae. Codemasters, you utter bastards.

PlayStation 3:n uusi, aiempaa pienikokoisempi ja vähemmän virtaa kuluttava malli saapuu kauppoihin syyskuun ensimmäisellä viikolla. Sain pelikonsolin näpelöitäväkseni muutamia päiviä aikaisemmin. Tässä alustavia mietteitä parin illan testailun jälkeen.

Aivan ensimmäisenä huomio kiinnittyy tietysti konsolin kokoon.

Aiemmin oikeassa päädyssä sijainneet logot on siirretty eteen oikealle kiintolevyä suojaavaan paneeliin. Kiintolevyn vaihtaminen on prikulleen yhtä yksinkertainen temppu kuin alkuperäisessä PS3:ssa, vaikka levyyn pääseekin nyt käsiksi etupaneelista.

Konsolin kyljissä on pari huomionarvoista seikkaa.

Ulkomittojen pienentyminen tarkoittaa luonnollisesti merkittäviä uudistuksia konsolin sisuskaluihin. Sen ytimenä hyrräävän Cell-prosessorin valmistuksessa on siirrytty 45 nanometrin tekniikkaan, minkä ansiosta piiri kuluttaa vähemmän virtaa ja käy aiempaa viileämpänä. Emolevy on tietysti entistä pienempi, mikä tarkoittaa todennäköisesti pienempää määrää komponentteja. Integroinnin myötä joitain ominaisuuksia on heitetty romukoppaan. PS2-yhteensopivuus on yksi uhreista: Slim ei tue PS2-pelejä raudalla eikä softalla. Myös mahdollisuus muun käyttöjärjestelmän, kuten Linuxin, asentamiseen on poistettu.

Slimissä on uusi HDMI-piiri, tällä kertaa ihan aidosti HDMI 1.3 -standardin mukainen. Piiri tuo muassaan mahdollisuuden siirtää Blu-ray-elokuvien HD-ääniraidat bitstream-muodossa HDMI-johtoa pitkin A/V-vahvistimen purettavaksi. Aiemmissa malleissa HD-ääniraidat piti purkaa PS3:ssa ensin PCM-muotoon. Toinen uusi omainaisuus on CEC, eli ohjauskomentojen välittäminen HDMI-johtoa pitkin laitteesta toiseen.

Eroja numeroina

Roudasin eri puolilta taloa työhuoneeseen kolme erilaista PS3:a ja tein niille sarjan mittauksia.

Stand-by: virrankulutus lepotilassa.
BD (PCM audio): virrankulutus Blu-ray-elokuvaa katsellessa. Äänilähdön muodoksi oli valittu monikanavainen PCM.
IDLE BD-toiston jälkeen: virrankulutus päävalikossa puolisen minuuttia Blu-ray-toiston pysäyttämisen jälkeen.
DVD 1080p (normal upscale, bitstream audio): virrankulutus 1080p-resoluution skaalatun DVD-toiston aikana.
Ghostbusters-pelissä täyden tohinan aikaan: arvaa.
Ghostbustersin asennuksessa: virrankulutus pelin asentuessa kiintolevylle.

Soitin ongelmieni kera taas Elisan tekniseen tukeen.

Luit oikein. Wippies-verkkoa ei ole suojattu mitenkään. Sen asetuksiin ei pääse käsiksi mitenkään. Sitä ei voi suojata mitenkään. Eikä sitä voi kytkeä pois päältä!

Huomanna soitan tulikivenkatkuisen puhelun Elisalle; moinen tietoturva-aukko on paikattava välittömästi.
