Full HD camcorders compared (appetizer).

A while back I got really excited about the latest batch of Full HD camcorders. I ordered a Panasonic HDC-SD7 from Japan and bought a Sony HDR-SR11 over here in Finland. A bit later Panasonic sent me a HDC-SD9 for testing.

All three camcorders shoot AVCHD at a resolution of 1920×1080i. Sony uses a 60GB hard disk drive for media, while both Panasonics rely on SDHC memory cards. I’ve been shooting some test footage and have a larger article planned, but it’s not quite done yet. I’m also waiting for Sony to deliver their brand new HDR-TG3 for a review.

To whet your appetite, here’s a screen capture comparing Sony SR11 and Panasonic SD9. Please note that clicking the thumbnail opens a large PNG file in a new window.

Panny SD9 vs. Sony SR11

Both cameras were operating in full auto mode. As you can see, Panny gets white balance wrong; that’s a white projection screen behind the doll. Sony’s image is also noticeably sharper and more detailed. That’s not the end of the story, however. Once I get the video clips up, you will notice some rather peculiar goings-on in the Sony footage.
